About this plant

Greek oregano, Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum, is selected for a strong culinary aroma. Italian oregano is generally milder and sweeter and is commonly sold from oregano and sweet marjoram parentage. Both need bright light and free-draining soil.

Uses

Best uses and placement

  • Greek oregano when a stronger culinary flavor is wanted
  • Italian oregano when a milder, sweeter flavor is preferred
  • Growing both types side by side in separate labeled pots
  • Sunny containers and small edible beds

Growing notes

Growing conditions

  • Give Greek oregano bright light and good drainage.
  • Let the pot start to dry between waterings. Oregano does not want to sit wet.
  • Pinch lightly after it settles so it branches instead of making one thin stem.
  • If moving outdoors, harden it off. Fresh greenhouse growth still needs a transition.
  • For winter, a protected pot is easier to manage than a wet exposed bed.

Plant health

Problems to watch for

  • Freshly planted starts may not have filled the pot yet. Avoid dividing them right away.
  • Weak flavor often comes from low light or overly lush growth.
  • Wet soil is a bigger problem than missing one watering.
  • Do not confuse it with Cuban oregano. They grow and taste different.
