About this plant
Basil, Ocimum basilicum, is a frost-tender annual herb. Italian, large leaf, and Genovese types are grown mainly for broad culinary leaves. Cinnamon and lemon basil contain different aromatic compounds, so their scent and flavor are distinct from standard sweet basil.
Uses
Best uses and placement
- Warm kitchen pots, greenhouse benches, deck planters, and patio containers
- Fresh leaf harvest for cooking, tea blends, vinegar, and herb trials
- Comparing several basil varieties side by side
- Orders where extra herb starts can be added as similar free plants
Growing notes
Growing conditions
- Basil grows best with warm roots, high light, and steady moisture.
- Harden plants off before full outdoor sun. Greenhouse-grown leaves can sunburn during the first bright afternoon outside.
- Water thoroughly, then let excess water drain. Basil declines in cold, saturated soil.
- Pinch the top growth above a node to keep the plant branching.
- Remove flower buds if leaf production is the goal. Flowering changes leaf texture and flavor.
Plant health
Problems to watch for
- Cold nights and wind can stop growth even after a warm day.
- Yellow lower leaves usually point to cold roots, wet soil, low light, or a crowded pot.
- Long weak stems usually mean the plant needs more light or more regular pinching.
- Basil is frost-tender and should stay protected during cold forecasts.
