Corn, Zea mays, needs warmth, strong sun, and a long enough season to form ears. A 1 gallon start gives the plant more root and leaf mass before transplanting, which matters in Eagle River where nights can stay cool well into summer.

Growing conditions
Plant corn in the warmest full-sun spot you have. Cold soil slows it down.
Set plants in a block if possible. Corn pollinates better with neighbors than in a single straight line.
Water at the root zone. Shallow watering makes shallow roots.
Feed once plants are actively growing. Corn uses a lot of nitrogen during vegetative growth.
Shelter tall starts from wind until new roots anchor them.

Transplant shock shows up as stalled growth. Keep the root ball intact and water it in well.
Purple or dull leaves can come from cold roots as well as nutrient stress.
